The Old Theater at the corner of Broad
and Church Streets in Oriental first opened as a movie
theater in 1945. It attracted patrons from throughout
Pamlico County, many of them using the then-existent
train service for their journey. It continued to serve
as a social and entertainment center until the late
1950s. After languishing for over thirty tears,
the theater has returned to help fulfill the entertainment,
cultural and civic needs of the County.
The Old Theater Corporation, a nonprofit organization,
was formed on May 8, 1992. It's responsible for the
renovation of the Center and its management as a permanent
home for theatrical productions, community affairs,
business promotion and other civic uses. The original
controlling Board of Directors was composed of Pamlico
County volunteers. If interested in serving or participating,
please contact the info@oldtheater.org.

The Pelican Players have been serving this community
since 1983, putting on many performances atthe Old Theater
(Pamlico County Civic and Community Center). This year
they have 3 plays planned. The Pelican Players productions
and playbill ads are the major source of income for
the Old Theater Corporation.
The Pelican Players presented their first show, "Bubbles",
which was the brainchild of a local playwright, Alston
Wheeler.
Now,
some twenty years later, the Pelican Players produce
four plays each season in a real theater, on a real
stage equipped with a real lighting system. Learn
