Pamlico
Musical Society is excited to announce that the dynamic
Catherine Russell is coming to the Old Theater. Russell's
voice has been called, "full blown femininity incarnate;"
a dusky, stalwart, and soulful instrument that radiates
interpretive power yet remains touchingly vulnerable.
She gets inside the melody of every tune and captures
every emotion. This native New Yorker has performed
and recorded with an impressive array of artists including
Paul Simon, David Bowie, Jackson Browne, Rosanne Cash,
Madonna, Isaac Hayes, and many more.
Grammy award-winning jazz afficionado, Phil Schaap,
has written of Russell that, "Sarah Vaughan, Bessie
Smith, Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday finally have
a worthy descendant." Her eagerly anticipated CD,
Sentimental Streak, has already received rave reviews
since being released in February. One reviewer wrote,
"This album may well become a vocal jazz classic;
and it could be the vehicle that propels Ms. Russell
to national stardom." Another wrote, "If this
one doesn't blow your socks off, you're already barefoot."
