Out
'n the Cold was formed purely by a chance meeting
in 1977 during a local live radio show in Elizabeth
City, NC. Three of the original members, Kent Luton,
Dickie Sanders, and Red Swain were there that day with
other musical groups; but after some inspiring 'back
room jam sessions', decided to put their own band together.
They started out with a five piece band, then dropped
to four for a while; and have now evolved to a seven
member group of very impressive musicians. The group
prides itself on its tight harmonies, strong back beats
and rhythms, musicianship, a good chunk of comedy; and
personalities beyond reproach.
The history of where, and who, some of the current
members have played and shared the stage with reads
like a 'who's who' in southern rock, bluegrass, and
country. Just to drop a few names: Vince Gill, Patty
Loveless, Ricky Scaggs, Greg Allman, Vasser Clemmens,
Doug Kershaw, 38 Special, The Marshall Tucker Band,
and Allison Krauss are some of the more notables.
ONTC's approach to song selections and arrangements
are very similar to those of The Seldom Scene, Hay Seed
Dixie, and Run CMW; they stay close to bluegrass, but
have been known to stray a bit into country, blues,
long-haired classical, and old rock-a-billy; all with
bluegrass instrumentation and harmonies.
Each member of ONTC has been around the music business
for a while and is as seasoned as you can get (without
getting too far into the deterioration stage). You owe
it to yourself to catch this act while they are still
alive and kicking. The show at the Old Theater promises
to be one to remember for a long time to come.
