Friday Flicks "The King's Speech" Feb 24 2012

Celebrate Oscar weekend with a winner of four Academy Awards in 2011!

In this historical drama directed by Tom Hooper, Colin Firth plays King George VI who, to cope with a stammer, sees Lionel Logue, an Australian speech therapist played by Geoffrey Rush. The men become friends as they work together, and after his brother abdicates the throne, the new King relies on Logue to help him make a radio broadcast on Britain’s declaration of war on Germany in 1939.

THE KING’S SPEECH was widely praised by film critics for its visual style, art direction and acting. Other commentators discussed the film’s representation of historical detail, especially the reversal of Winston Churchill’s opposition to abdication. It has won seven British Academy Film Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Firth), Best Supporting Actor (Rush) and Best Supporting Actress (Bonham Carter). The film also won four Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director (Hooper), Best Actor (Firth) and Best Original Screenplay (Seidler).

Friday Flicks "Double Indemnity" Mar 16 2012

DOUBLE INDEMNITY represents the high-water mark of 1940s film noir urban crime dramas in which a greedy, weak man is seduced and trapped by a cold, evil woman amidst the dark shadows and expressionist lighting of modern cities.

Phyllis Dietrichson (Barbara Stanwyck) seduces insurance agent Walter Neff (Fred MacMurray) into murdering her husband to collect his accident policy. The murder goes as planned, but after the couple’s passion cools, each becomes suspicious of the other’s motives. The plan is further complicated when Neff’s boss, Barton Keyes (Edward G. Robinson), a brilliant insurance investigator, takes over the investigation.

Told in flashbacks from Neff’s perspective, the film moves with ruthless determinism as each character meets what seems to be a preordained fate. The three seasoned leads give some of their best performances and Wilder’s cynical sensibility finds a perfect match in the story’s unsentimental perspective. All is heightened by John Seitz’s hard-edged cinematography, best appreciated on our big screen. This “film noir” is top-of-the-line filmmaking and was rated top 29th film of all time by the American Film Institute.

Friday Flicks "The Thin Man" Apr 27 2012

Based on the popular novel, THE THIN MAN presents a completely egalitarian husband and wife who trade witticisms as freely as they mix cocktails. The concept was so completely unexpected that it proved extremely controversial in the 1930s and even today still sets the standard for witty comedies in which couples engage in clever verbal sparring. The script is sharp and clever; the cinematography by James Wong Howe anticipates later film noir by mixing glossy black and white beauty with an underlying grittiness; W.S. Van Dyke’s direction is fast paced and never allows your attention to wander; the supporting cast is remarkably fine; and the production values offer MGM at the height of its considerable powers.

All of this would be enough to make THE THIN MAN memorable, but what really elevates it into a rarified atmosphere is the chemistry between leads William Powell and Myrna Loy, who play a combination of dry wit and unexpected silliness in high relief against a remarkably dark tale of multiple murder. Hard drinking, and mixing socially with both the upper-crust and the underworld, they are glamorous, stylish, intelligent and have tremendous fun as they work together to track down a missing inventor who may or may not be responsible for his lover’s sudden murder. Although Powell and Loy made numerous films together, including five sequels to this one, THE THIN MAN shows them at their zenith.

Friday Flicks "Duck Soup" May 18 2012

Now considered a comic masterpiece, DUCK SOUP underperformed with critics and the box office when it came out, skewering fascism, petty dictators and warmongering. But time has proven it the best of the Marx Brothers’ movies. It is a frantic, funny satire with rapid-fire gags and some of the most inspired physical comedy ever to hit the screen.

The plot, such as it is, has Rufus Firefly (Groucho) taking the reins of the fictional nation of Freedonia and wreaking havoc. He manages to immediately alienate its Ambassador (Louis Calhern) from the neighboring country of Sylvania, and brings both countries to the brink of war. There’s a great deal of silliness revolving around inept spies Chico and Harpo, war plans held by a rich, patriotic widow (Margaret Dumont) and the machinations of an exotic temptress (Raquel Torres) in league with Sylvania. But None of it really matters, because the whole thing is really just an opportunity for the brothers to poke fun at tinpot rulers, nonsensical government bureaucracy, pompous diplomats and the absurdity of reckless war – all with dollops of vaudeville-style zaniness, one-liners and wordplay. Duck Soup also features two of the most iconic and imitated scenes in comedy: Harpo’s confrontation with the lemonade vendor and Groucho and Harpo’s magical mirror scene in their nightcaps.
